Jinashi Shakuhachi Making Workshop
ESS Shakuhachi Summer School 2011 offers two 2-day workshops on how to make your own Jinashi Shakuhachi (Hotchiku) with Chiku Za a.k.a. Kodama Hiroyuki (with the assistance of José Vargas and Philip Horan).
An overview of the Shakuhachi Making Workshop: Jinashi Shakuhachi Making Workshop (PDF).
The workshop will provide the necessary tools and bamboo. However, there is an extra cost when participating in the Jinashi Shakuhachi making workshop.
It is important to view the full details of the costs and booking procedure for the Shakuhachi Making Workshop.

Listen To Example Shakuhachi Made During Short Seminars
Sanya by Juan Carlos Duende. This bamboo, a 2.8, began to split right after marking 2nd hole, even before drilling, and we had to make an emergency repair the first day at the jinashi making workshop in Madrid 2010. Finally, the flute could be made, but after the workshop it continued cracking, and had to be fully repaired again. Juan Carlos made some more adjustments, improving the flute to what it is now, a very remarkable flute, and a good example of successful bad luck. Also, a fine version of Sanya.
ShakuHendrix by Dominique Houlet. This 2nd example, a wide 3.0, was made without any problems, also at the ChikuZa workshop in Madrid. It was improved afterwards by Dominique, who takes us to another world with his ShakuHendrix, an improvisation showing the tone and the big fun of hotchiku, with just some reverb and echo added to the recording.
Concerts
There will be "open mic" nights, teachers' concerts and, on the last day, a students' concert. See the schedule for details.
